Features of the Playstation 3 Console

Memory

The PlayStation 3 supports several forms of portable media. It has 6 USB 2.0 ports, a memory stick slot, an SD slot, and the system supports compact flash. The PlayStation 3 has 256MB of XDR (external data representation) memory and 256MB of GDDR3 memory dedicated to graphics. The Playstation 3 also features Blu-ray, an optical disc format meant for high definition video (HD) and high density data storage.

Multimedia

In terms of multimedia Playstation 3 features, a great Playstation 3 feature is its capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers, which can operate for almost twenty four hours non stop playing without being recharged. Using Bluetooth, the PlayStation 3 BD Remote allows users to control videos and music on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. The Playstation 3 also has internet access. It has wi-fi technology but can also be connected to a broadband internet connection. When the user accesses the internet there is instant access to the free Playstation 3 network which includes network gaming and web browsing. The internet offers users the chance to download new Playstation 3 features for their current games, as well as being able to chat to other users.

Accessories

The Playstation 3 comes with a Sixaxis feature, a controller that is similar in appearance to the ones that have come before, the DualShock 1 and 2. It features advanced analog sensitivity, which detects motion created by the user. In a flying game, for example, if the user of the controller moves the Sixaxis to the left, the game will respond. Unlike the previous models, it has no vibration feature, but the new Playstation 3 features more than make up for the lack of vibration. The Sixaxis also comes with R2 and L2 buttons that are more trigger-like in appearance, as well as a Playstation ‘home’ button that takes users to the home area, and a USB mini port that allows the user to charge the internal battery.

The PlayStation 3 also comes with a memory card adaptor, a device which allows saved game information to be transferred from PlayStation and PlayStation 2 memory cards to the PlayStation 3’s hard disk.

Soon to be released for Playstation 3 accessories is the Playstation Eye, an updated version of Playstation 2’s EyeToy. The camera is can capture 60 frames per second video at 640×480 resolution. The microphone on the new gadget can block out background noise and in addition the camera will support live video chat and voice chat without a headset. It will be released late in 2007.

Backward Compatibility

The Playstation 3 console has been designed with a backward compatibility, which basically means that both Playstation 1 and 2 games can play on the Playstation 3 console.
